Why do you have to have windows and doors open when running an air cooler?

In order to enable an evaporative air cooler to perform to its maximum potential it is necessary that it should draw in warm, dry outside air across the water saturated pads, and it should be able to release the excess humidity which would otherwise decrease the effectiveness of the cooler.

The cooling process of evaporating water increases the humidity of the air that exits the unit, this increase in humidity necessitates that a window or door on the other side of the room be left open to allow the moist air to exit. If the air cooler were to operate in a closed room then it would be able to draw only the humid air inside the room so the temperature and the humidity levels in the room would quickly rise to an uncomfortable level.
